Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between plexiglass and acrylic?
The difference lies in the manufacturing process, which can be extrusion or cell casting. Plexiglass has a more rigid and transparent surface and is more scratch-resistant than extruded acrylic sheets.
What are acrylic tubes used for?
Extruded acrylic tubing is lightweight and easy to work with, making it an excellent choice for applications requiring customization. It is often used in displays, lighting fixtures, and other applications where clarity and durability are important.
Can you cut acrylic tube?
Cutting acrylic tube can be quite difficult as it splinters easily, but a very fine-toothed saw used slowly can work well, or a wheel cutter if it is not tightened too quickly. After cutting, you may need some emery cloth to remove sharp edges and small splinters.
Can you bend acrylic tubes?
One thing to confess to you is that the acrylic tube is harder and not as easy to handle as PVC material. It needs a “thermoforming” process to bend it. Simply put, the acrylic tube needs to be heated to soften it.
How do you glue acrylic tubing?
Acrylics are not actually glued: they are chemically ‘welded’ together using a special cement. Acrylic cement does not stick the surfaces to one another – instead, it bonds them permanently. Tensol 12 is a single component cement, ideal for bonding cast acrylic pieces where strength isn’t so important.
